Final Project in Immersive Theatre Lighting Design

Accent Lighting #

Focused light used to highlight specific elements or areas within an immersive theatre production, such as a prop, costume, or performer. Accent lighting creates visual interest and helps guide the audience's attention.

Architectural Lighting #

Lighting design that focuses on enhancing the architectural features and aesthetics of a physical space. In immersive theatre, architectural lighting can help establish the overall atmosphere and mood of the production.

Color Rendering Index (CRI) #

A measurement of a light source's ability to reveal the true colors of objects in comparison to a natural light source. A high CRI value (closer to 100) indicates that the light source will render colors accurately.

Color Temperature #

The perceived "warmth" or "coolness" of a light source, measured in Kelvin (K). Lower color temperatures (2000-3000K) produce a warm, red-orange light, while higher color temperatures (4000-5000K) produce a cool, blue-white light.

Cove Lighting #

A lighting technique that utilizes a recessed fixture or housing to diffuse light across a ceiling or wall. Cove lighting provides gentle, ambient illumination, often used in immersive theatre to establish a specific mood or atmosphere.

DMX512 #

A standardized digital communication protocol used for controlling stage lighting and effects. DMX512 transmits data over a balanced, twisted-pair cable and allows for the control of up to 512 channels of information.

Downlight #

A light fixture that directs light downward, often used in immersive theatre for general illumination or to create specific lighting effects.

Fixture #

A complete lighting unit, usually consisting of a lamp, housing, and mounting hardware. In immersive theatre, various types of fixtures are used to create different lighting effects.

Fresnel #

A type of lighting fixture that utilizes a lens to control and shape the light beam. Fresnels are commonly used in immersive theatre for stage lighting due to their adjustable focus and relatively even light distribution.

Gobo #

A metal or glass template placed in front of a light source to create a specific pattern or shape. Gobos are often used in immersive theatre to project textures, patterns, or images onto sets, performers, or other surfaces.

Gel #

A thin, colored sheet of plastic or glass used to modify the color or quality of light emitted from a fixture. Gels are often used in immersive theatre to create specific moods, atmospheres, or to correct color temperature.

Intelligent Lighting #

Lighting fixtures equipped with motors or other mechanical components that allow the light source to move, change focus, or alter its beam. Intelligent lighting is often used in immersive theatre to create dynamic, interactive lighting effects.

LED #

Light Emitting Diodes are solid-state light sources that are energy efficient and long-lasting. LEDs are commonly used in immersive theatre for stage lighting, architectural lighting, and special effects.

Light Plot #

A technical drawing that illustrates the placement, type, and electrical requirements of lighting fixtures for a specific immersive theatre production.

Moving Head #

A type of intelligent lighting fixture that incorporates a moving light source, allowing for pan, tilt, focus, and color changes. Moving heads are often used in immersive theatre to create dynamic, animated lighting effects.

PAR Can #

A type of lighting fixture that utilizes a Pressure-Aided Reflector and a high-intensity lamp. PAR Cans are often used in immersive theatre for stage lighting and effects due to their bright, adjustable beams.

Profile Spot #

A type of lighting fixture that features a lens and shutters to control and shape the light beam. Profile spots are often used in immersive theatre to highlight specific performers or areas on stage.

Rigging #

The system of ropes, pulleys, and hardware used to suspend and support lighting fixtures, scenery, and other production elements in immersive theatre.

Scroller #

A device that holds a series of gel frames, allowing for smooth, motorized transitions between colors. Scrollers are often used in immersive theatre for color washing or to create gradual color changes.

Stage Lighting #

The design and application of lighting specifically for theatrical performances. Stage lighting in immersive theatre serves to enhance the storytelling, create moods and atmospheres, and guide the audience's focus.

Wash #

A lighting technique that evenly distributes light over a large area, often used in immersive theatre to create general illumination or to establish specific moods or atmospheres.
